Good accessories last for years if you look after them, and most of that care takes a few minutes with things you already have at home: warm water, coarse salt, isopropyl alcohol from the pharmacy aisle, a soft brush and a clean cloth. Here is how we look after our own.
Glass
Glass is easiest to clean little and often, before residue sets. Rinse it with warm (not boiling) water after use. For a deeper clean, seal it in a zip-lock bag with isopropyl alcohol and a spoonful of coarse salt, shake gently for a minute or two, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and leave it to dry completely before you use it again.
Grinders
A grinder that sticks usually just needs clearing. Pop it in the freezer for half an hour so the residue goes brittle, then brush the teeth and the screen with a soft, dry brush. Metal grinders can then be soaked in isopropyl alcohol, rinsed and dried; wipe wooden and acrylic ones instead, because soaking warps wood and clouds acrylic. Put the pieces back together only when they are completely dry.
Papers, cones and filters
Keep them flat, sealed and dry. Humidity is what ruins them, so a drawer is better than a bathroom shelf, and the original packet or a small tin keeps them from creasing.
Storage
Step 1
Airtight and opaque
A sealed, opaque container keeps out air, light and moisture, which are what make things go stale.
Step 2
Cool, dry and steady
Away from windows, stoves and the car's dashboard: heat and sunlight age everything faster.
Step 3
Out of reach
Locked or on a top shelf, away from children and pets, and clearly labelled.
Sharing
Keep your own mouthpiece, or wipe one with an alcohol swab between people. It is simple hygiene, the same as you would with a water bottle.
